because people who watch wrestling religiously tend to blur fantasy with reality. they watch the cool wrestling moves and see that they cant be fake. and the moves are not fake but they are very well rehearsed and done in a special setting where noone will get severely injured. You can slam a guy on his back in a wrestling ring because it is practically a trampoline- i know because i walked on one before. Slam a guy on his back on cement or asphault and he will most likely have a cracked skull.
The hardcore fans- and the wrestlers, wont admit that it is athletic but it is not a sport in the same way that football, or boxing is because the winner is already chosen before the match. It is also interesting to know that hardcore wrestling fans also tend to have a lower IQ than the average population!
